Sottile Dry Cleaners was formed in the mid-1930s by John Sottile from Patton, PA. The shop was located on Bigler Avenue on the corner where Hope's Villa Childcare is now. In the early 40s, John was going to buy two lots on the next block up toward the Nicktown Road intersection from Ansel Grybowski. But World War II came and John was drafted into the army.
After the war, John purchased those two lots and started construction of the building at 2308 Bigler Avenue. It has a large drive-in basement, the shop on the ground floor, and two 9-room apartments on the 2nd floor. John's older brother, Tony, was a barber in Michigan before World War II. After discharge, he decided to go into partnership with John. The business opened in 1948, and John, Tony, and their families moved into the apartments.
The business thrived. Back then, most clothes needed dry cleaned—wash and wear clothes were still years away. They started a pick-up service which Tony did. There was a "Sottile Dry Cleaners" sign that customers would put in the front window of their home.
Going into the 1970s, wash and wear clothes were becoming much more prevalent and the volume of business slowed. It was no longer necessary to have clothes picked up at a customer's home. The number of employees dwindled, so it was mostly John and Tony doing everything themselves. In the spring of 1979, they decided to close the business and retire.
Tony passed away in 1997 and John in 2001. John's wife lived in the building until she passed away in 2015. In 2016, the building was sold to Danny Ferrel, who gutted the ground floor and has turned the building into four very nice apartments.
